THE FLAT

September 2021 - January 2022

A digital illustration, fully-rendered and drawn in full perspective, of the carpeted living room and checker-tile kitchen of a yellow-walled apartment. Among the many items in the wooden-cabinet kitchen are a kitschy toaster, a pot rack with potted herbs on the shelf above, red curtains on the window above the sink, a hanging paper towel roll, and a past-century Union Jack dish towel on the stove. Among the many, many items in the living room are a huge, cushy brown sectional; a candy dish in the shape of a pigeon, small clock, and bottle with carnations all resting on top of a black digital piano sitting under a round wooden mirror; a thick wooden coffee table with various books and board games stored on its lower shelf, a collection of canvas photos on the wall, and an acoustic guitar on a guitar rack in the foreground. A tea tray rests on a dividing counter between the two spaces, lit from above by counter lights in a low part of the ceiling above the counter. Among many items in a small wood-floor entrance space on the other end of the flat are a simple floor lamp; two pairs of shoes (brown loafers and knee-high punk boots); a wall-mounted wooden coat rack holding a thick wool coat, gray flat cap, red scarf, and dark denim jacket; and a small wooden crucifix tucked above the door and below the flat's crown molding. The whole illustration is rich with warmth and detail. The following four videos include a video showing three versions of the room (including two with slightly different furniture); a process video showing linework, flat colors, and full render; a video showing all the layers of objects in the illustration, including some objects in the foreground not visible in the main image (such as the backs of a microwave, refrigerator, and bookshelves); and a video showing how all five light sources in the image can be independently operated and turned on and off and how that changes the overall lighting of the piece.
